When we were thinking about Memorial Day here at the Mesothelioma Center, we started to think about all of the men and women who sacrificed their lives fighting for this country – in and out of war.
The statistics of veteran’s asbestos exposure while in service is staggering. For example, did you know that 1 out of every 3 cases of mesothelioma are veterans? It’s true. With that in mind, we felt it was our duty to bring to light just how much asbestos has had an effect on our military.
Why is this even an issue you ask? Asbestos was used in many military products due to its insulating and heat-resistance properties. Because of this, it was ordered for widespread usage in all of its departments over the span of 40 years. During this time, the military used tons of asbestos for construction and transportation purposes, among others.
Some of those buildings, tanks, and ships built with asbestos materials still exist today. Since asbestos is not banned in the United States, this will may continue to be an issue until further action is required by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
