VETERANS TO RECEIVE COST-OF-LIVING ADJUSTMENT: The President recently signed into law S. 2562, the Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2006. The law provides, effective December 1, 2006, a 3.3 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to the rates of disability compensation for veterans with service-connected disabilities and the rates of dependency and indemnity compensation paid to the survivors of certain service-disabled veterans. The COLA is based on the rise in the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) and is equal to the COLA applied to Social Security Benefits. VA ANNOUNCES VETERANS PRIDE INITIATIVE: Leaders of major veteran’s organizations have joined Veterans Affairs Secretary R. James Nicholson to ask men and women who have served in the military to wear their medals on Veterans Day. The Veterans Pride Initiative is modeled after a tradition in Australia and New Zealand. Mr. Nicholson said he hopes a U.S. tradition will ensue to emulate this pride in being a veteran and in honoring the nation's veterans. For more information, visit the VA's Veterans Pride Initiative web page at: http://www1.va.gov/veteranspride/ where veterans can also obtain information about how to replace mislaid medals and learn how to confirm the decorations to which they are entitled.
