Queens, NY, April 18, 2012 – With the return of our military men and women from overseas deployments, and while there is still high unemployment in Queens and New York City, NYS Senator Joseph Addabbo and Assemblyman Mike Miller have set a Veterans (& Spouses) Job Readiness Workshop for Friday, April 27 from 10 AM to 3 PM at The Shops at Atlas Park, 8000 Cooper Avenue, Glendale (near ground floor front entrance). There is free parking in the south garage only. This free event is open to all veterans and spouses only.
Some of the organizations and agencies that will be participating in this job readiness workshop are: AARP Driver Safety; Black Veterans for Social Justice, Inc.; Brooklyn Public Library; Chrysalis Career Coaching; CNYCN; Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield; FEDCAP; Jericho Project; Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs; Mercy College; Neighborhood Health Providers; New York State Department of Labor; New York State Department of Labor; New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance; NYS Division of Veterans Affairs; NYS EPIC Program; Purzue; Queens Legal Services; Queens Public Library; US Customs & Border Protection; US Department of Veterans Affairs; Vietnam Veterans of America - Chapter 32.
At this free workshop, veterans and their spouses only will receive benefits information; lectures helpful to the job search; five-minute resume review (if additional help is recommended, you will be able to make an appointment to meet a counselor at a later date). Attendees must bring Veterans ID (VA ID, active Military ID, DD 214, etc.). Spouses should bring service member's DD 214 and proof of marriage.
The Workshop Schedule includes: 10:15 AM-WorkPays NY – OTDA; 10:45 AM-How to Successfully Work a Job Fair; 11:15 AM-Interview Tips & Techniques; 12 PM-Transitioning from Military to Civilian Life; 12:45 PM-Five-Minute Resume Evaluation Begins—bring a resume.
Save the date! Senator Addabbo and Assemblyman Miller are also hosting a Veterans (& Spouses) Job Fair on June 8, 2012, from 10 AM to 3 PM at The Shops at Atlas Park in Glendale. Employers will be looking to hire qualified candidates. Industries represented will include Finance; Health Care; Retail; Sales; Social Services; Transportation; Trades; Information Technology; more. Training opportunities will also be available. This free event is open to all veterans and spouses only.
