WASHINGTON, D.C.— Tomorrow, Friday, June 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Capitol Visitor Center HVC Studio A (access thru HVC 117), Chairman Jeff Miller, Ranking Member Mike Michaud and Reps. Mike Coffman and Ann Kirkpatrick will hold a press conference to announce new HVAC oversight and investigative efforts aimed at ensuring that the Department of Veterans Affairs is properly protecting the digital records and personal information of America's veterans.
In a June 4 HVAC hearing, VA's Acting Chief Information Officer Stephen Warren testified under oath that the department's information technology systems were breached, potentially compromising the sensitive personally identifiable information of some 20 million American veterans. Warren's testimony marked the first time VA has admitted to Congress that its systems have been compromised and called into question an emphatic assertion from VA Secretary Eric Shinseki just weeks earlier that VA's network "security posture was never at risk." The following press conference will focus on the next steps in HVAC's ongoing oversight and investigative efforts to ensure that VA is being honest with Congress about its network security challenges while properly protecting the personal information of some 20 million veterans and their families.
